Dr. Hsu established this lab in 2004. She is currently the Director of the Graduate Institute of Microbiology and Public Health and a Distinguished Professor at National Chung Hsing University.

Wei-Li completed her DVM and M.Sc. in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and the Graduate Institute of Veterinary Microbiology at National Chung Hsing University. She then moved to Scotland to pursue her Ph.D. at the University of Glasgow under the supervision of Dr. Roger Everett. She subsequently completed her postdoctoral training in the laboratories of Dr. James R. Smiley and Dr. Laurence Tiley at the University of Alberta and the University of Cambridge.

Her research focuses on the molecular virology of several viruses and the development of diagnostic systems for multiple animal viruses.

Allie completed her M.Sc. in 2018, where she focused on developing recombinant Orf virus as a viral vector in Hsu's lab. After graduation, she moved on to a research assistant position in the same lab and has been involved in multiple projects related to Orf virus, influenza, and clinical diagnostics.

Raison joined the Hsu lab for his master's studies in 2021, where he focused on comparative transcriptomic analysis of influenza viruses carrying different avian NS variants. He continued his Ph.D. studies in the Hsu lab, further advancing his research on influenza viruses with training in molecular virology. At the same time, he is also involved in multiple genomic analysis projects on veterinary viruses. Outside of research, he plays electric guitar and collects vinyl records, especially rock, funk, and heavy metal.

Yuan Hao is an undergraduate student in Dept. of Life Science in NCHU, becoming a cat person in Dr Hsu’s lab in 2023. He learns bioinformatic analysis and molecular biology techniques to investigate the promoter characteristics and comparative genomics in the first-sequenced Taiwanese Orf virus strain. He will move to Taipei and try to survive during his master’s degree at SMARTMHI program in Taiwan university, hoping the advanced hospital besides can extend his life at least until the next time point to harvest the cells.

Jay holds a triple appointment in the lab: managing supply chains, overseeing internal communications (as our dedicated operator), and being the lab’s official "Big Baby." His technical work involves the intricate world of SFTSV G protein diagnostics. Despite his expertise in protein science, he currently finds himself perplexed by a complex variable: how to successfully graduate with both his BS and MS degrees without a hitch.

Carina focused on fungal research during her undergraduate studies, specifically exploring mycotic dermatitis. This experience ignited her passion for microbiology, leading her to pursue a Master’s degree in the Hsu Lab, where she currently develops diagnostic methods for the Tembusu virus. Beyond the bench, Carina explores economics and finance, an interest inspired by her family. Her love for K-pop also drew her into the world of vinyl, leading her to acquire a diverse record collection and a beautifully crafted turntable.

William, a second-year master student, joined Hsu’s laboratory in 2024. He received his bachelor of cellular biotechnology degree from Department of Life Science (now Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine), National Dong Hwa University (NDHU). He worked on Epstein Barr virus latent genes in NDHU. Now, his research of the master degree in Hsu’s laboratory is to develop recombinant influenza viruses carrying reporter genes for high-throughput screeing of antivirals. William spends his leisure time attending classical concerts or playing the piano.

Mr. Islam joined Hsu’s Virology Lab in January 2026 as part of an NSTC project focused on developing armed and disarmed ORF viruses as safe viral vectors for oncolytic therapy. His academic background includes a PhD from Japan, in September 2025, focused on protein purification and immune modulation using solubility-controlling peptide tags, and a Master’s from Bangladesh in June 2022, emphasizing anti-dengue strategies using viral envelope protein domain III. He is passionate about viral vector development and, outside the lab, enjoys reading or traveling.
